Brazilian Grand Prix: Sébastien Buemi 12th
It was a difficult weekend for Sébastien Buemi in
Sao Paulo for the last race of the Formula One
Championship 2011. After missing the first free
practice session and then side-lined with a
hydraulic problem for the third session, very little
was done to optimize the settings of his Toro
Rosso for the Interlagos circuit. With limited
testing, the Vaudois did well to make the 14th
time in qualification, a tenth of a second behind
his team mate Alguersuari 13th. On a positive
side, the Toro Rossos were in front of the two
Saubers at the start of the race predicting a
close duel up to the last lap for 7th position in
the Constructor Championship.
At the start, Buemi passed Alguersuari but soon Kobayashi’s Sauber overtook the Swiss and after a battle between the Toro Rossos and the Saubers during the first 20 laps, the Japanese demonstrated a superior race speed. Behind, Buemi managed to enter the point zone making 8th position before his first tyre change but his lap time was not good enough for final points. His Toro Rosso was set up for rain - and he could see the dark Sao Paulo sky - but the track remained dry. The gamble didn’t pay off and Sébastien was powerless when Alguersuari passed him two thirds into the race, the pair eventually finishing 11th and 12th. Kobayashi’s Sauber finished 9th and collected three points to keep Sauber in seventh place in the constructor standings.
